Keep blending classroom…
Building Blocks believes “quality” of one’s childhood predicts much about the “quality” of one’s future. Therefore, our goal is to give each child in our homelike school a childhood rich in the kinds of experiences and relationships which optimally prepare them for their life’s journey.
At Building Blocks Preschool our teachers observe, document and research children’s thinking and learning to guide and support and experiences. “We are excited that our nature preschool program runs year around. There is so much to learn with Michigan’s four seasons. Our children become observers, noticing the big changes and the small ones”. The mission of Building Blocks Preschool is to “build a foundation for a love for learning”. With our inquire based-emergent curriculum we incorporate outdoor play, nature exploration, and environmental practices, such as recycling and conservation. We play and we play a lot.
Creating relationships with teachers, classmates and our environment gives our children a deep respect for each other and the outdoors.
The fundamental values are based on an image of children as curious, competent, and capable of co-constructing knowledge. From the moment of birth, children are engaged in a search for the meaning of life, seeking to understand the world that surrounds them and the relationships that they form and develop with others in their world. If we were talking to you on your first day here we would say, “Welcome to planet Earth. There is nothing that you cannot be or do or have. And your work here—your lifetime career—is to seek joy.”

Building Blocks Preschool in Oakland County have again been designated an official Michigan Green School – Evergreen Level (20+ points). We celebrated our Ninth year award in 2019. This is the highest distinction a school can receive for its conservation and environmental programs and initiatives. This is the second consecutive year that Building Blocks Preschool in Highland, MI has been awarded this honor. In its award to Building Blocks Preschool, the Green Schools awards committee cited, “It takes extra time, effort, planning, and drive to implement the initiatives outlined in the Green Schools Program. We appreciate your involvement and leadership in coordinating the Green Schools program as well the efforts of the students, staff, parents, volunteers and school community.
The teachers at Building Blocks Preschool are Project Learning Tree trained, they are natural authentic learners themselves and love the outdoors. Some children are a little squeamish when they see a snake or a bug, but most of the kids are right on them, children are natural explorers and when they see their friends excited, the wonderment is contagious” said Suzanne Gabli, Executive Director
